When governors and mayors across the country began to mandate restaurants and bars to close up their dining rooms for the foreseeable future, it was clear that the effect the coronavirus would have on the hospitality industry was like nothing we’ve seen before. Our eyes were glued to our screens, reading news updates and Instagram posts from our favorite restaurants here in New York City. We wanted to help—in a bigger way beyond donating to relief funds, buying merch, and ordering takeout—but we didn’t know how, so we started documenting. What resulted was a timeline of events chronicling the industry’s downfall, resilience, and quest for survival. That’s how we realized that something was missing from the dialogue.
